Gyeonggi International Ceramic Biennale, South Korea
27 September - 17 November 2013

The exhibition ‘Home’ delves into the nuanced concept of community.

When people move abroad, does home shift to a new country, or does it remain rooted in the place of their birth? Is the essence of home inherently tied to community, and if so, does creating a new community establish a new sense of home?

In collaboration with Melbourne’s Korean community, I explored these questions. Through a ceramic workshop, participants created sculptures that expressed both what they missed from Korea and what they cherished in their new Australian home.

Their migration stories, cultural adaptation, and evolving sense of community inspired my creation of four artworks, each responding to the participants’ sculptures. This collaboration highlighted four key themes that define home: family ties, communication, cultural heritage, and personal connections.

The project ultimately suggests that building new communities can reshape the meaning of home, grounded in shared experiences and relationships.
