Happy Together 2017

Edwina Corlette Gallery, Brisbane

In October 2016, Srivilasa was deeply affected by the death of the King of Thailand, Bhumibol Adulyadej. Drawing on this sadness, the artist felt the need to create work that was cheerful, uplifting and expressed happiness.

Undertaking self-directed research, Srivilasa discovered that taking and sharing photographs with positive and optimistic imagery — including smiling “selfies” — can have an uplifting effect on your mood.  In response to the confirmation of what the artist already felt to be true, Srivilasa created “selfie sculptures” inspired by many selfie photos he found online.

“Generally, most of the ‘selfie’ photos that make me happy are the ones when people posted with the “V” hand symbol.  In Asia, this hand symbol signifies peace and happiness.” - Vipoo Srivilasa

Working with the hand symbol became a way for the artist to cope with the loss of Thailand’s long reigning King and try to find peace and contentment in this grieving. Happy Together ‘selfie-sculptures’ more that made him feel happier, he also experienced a positive change in his overall mood feeling more, mindful, reflective, and appreciative.
