Everyday Shrines 2018

Gippsland Art Gallery, Victoria
29 Mar - 17 Jun 2018

In this series of pedestal-based sculptures, Srivilasa posed a question: What if Australians believed in Thai superstitions, and if so, what would this hybridised belief system and performative action look like?

His response was a series of ceramic shrines mixing decorative motifs from Australian folklore with Thai deities.

“I created Everyday Shrines as a sanctuary for the contemplation and evaluation of your success or failure in life. This engagement is a superstitious practice that I bring from my homeland of Thailand. When asking a favour at a shrine, you can offer one of your small belongings to a powerful deity of your choice who, in turn, could grant you the satisfaction that you desire: love, happiness, good fortune, success, luck or even fertility.” - Vipoo Srivilasa
