The Marriage of Sang Thong 2019

SAC Gallery, Bangkok
23 Nov 2019 - 19 Jan 2020

Edwina Corlette Gallery, Brisbane
8 – 28 August 2019

The Marriage of Sang Thong was at the time, a deeply personal story for Srivilasa as it mirrored the situation of same-sex marriage in Australia, where the artist lives and Thailand, his country of birth.

The traditional Thai folk tale tells of Prince Sang Thong and his love Rochana and the trials the couple endure before their love, which contravenes social conventions eventually gains acceptance.

Srivilasa received funding in 2017 from the Australia Council which funded a mentorship with the multidisciplinary Thai artist Sakarin Krue-On. Krue-On encouraged Srivilasa to explore new materials such as bronze, glass, wood and to incorporate his lived experience of Thai culture to expand conceptual and technical areas of his practice.

The resulting exhibition is a celebration of love, a declaration of victory and a joyous expression of ardour and commitment.
